Layout Editor: How do I create an l-wrapper zoned layout with a Fullscreen look change in Venus Control Suite

Topic

A zoned layout consisting of an L-wrapper is commonly used to display data feeds on an LCD display.  One of the benefits of this type of layout is it allows you to display several pieces of content at once while maintaining a standard 16:9 aspect ratio in the main zone of the screen so that standard HD content (such as 1920x1080) can easily be displayed without any distortion or loss of quality.

This process requires Layout Editor and Web Editor in Venus Controls Suite.  To familiarize yourself with these apps you can follow the links below to some introductory training and guides:

Steps

Open the Layout Editor from the Apps Menu located in the top right of the VCS landing page.

Create new layout.

  1. Select Add New to create a new layout.
  2. Name the layout and select the screen size. Most single LCD displays will be 1920x1080 or a 16:9 aspect ratio.
  3. Click on the Looks tab and rename the Look by clicking the pencil icon nested under the 3 dots.
  4. Add a Main Content Zone to the Look by clicking the Plus Icon.
  5. Click on the Properties tab and select Lock Aspect Ratio with the zone still selected.  This ensures the main zone retains a 16:9 aspect ratio.  Resize the zone to the desired size.  A common size is 1504x846, this leaves a good amount of space for the bottom and side zones.

Add another zone on the Looks tab and resize it to fit along the bottom, make sure Lock Aspect Ratio is off but Snap Elements is on to help you position the zone below the Main Zone Repeat the above step to create the side zone, make sure it does not overlap with the bottom zone.  Note that this zone may be on the left or the right of the screen based on your preferences.  Below is an example:

  • Note the zone sizes in the properties panel, this will be the ideal resolution to create content to for each zone.  In this example the bottom zone is 1920x234 px and the side zone is 416x846 px.
  • Save your layout.

Create the full screen layout in the Venus Layout Editor App.

This optional step allows you to transition between an L-wrapper layout to a full screen layout.
  1. Return to the Looks tab and click Add Look. Rename this look to Fullscreen.
  2. Add a new zone but this time, select the existing Main Content Zone that was created previously.
  3. Resize this zone by clicking and dragging on the corner handles or navigate to the Properties panel to adjust the Width and Height to the full resolution of your display.  This will commonly be 1920x1080 px for HD LCD displays.
  4. Navigate to the Settings tab and set the Schedule Zone Control to the Main Content Zone.  This zone will be used to trigger the look changes between the zones and the Fullscreen layouts.
  5. Set this as the default look by clicking the House icon under the looks tab if desired.
  6. Save the layout.
Apply the layout to your display(s).
  1. Open Venus Displays App from the Apps Menu located in the top right of the VCS landing page. Venus: My navigation has changed after updates.
  2. Select a display from the Displays page.
  3. Under the Configuration tab, locate the Layout section.
  4. Click Add Layout, select your L-wrapper Layout.
