University of Maryland Upgrades Centerhung Experience at XFINITY Center with Daktronics Installation
Main video, corner and underbelly displays take center stage for Terps
BROOKINGS, S.D. – June 12, 2024 – To bring a new audiovisual experience to XFINITY Center in College Park, Maryland, Daktronics (NASDAQ-DAKT) of Brookings, South Dakota, has partnered with the University of Maryland. The new 12-display centerhung system features four main video displays that seamlessly connect to four corner displays to surround the structure in visuals and four underbelly displays angled toward the side and end lines. The installation of this visual centerpiece will be completed in 2024 ahead of the fall and winter sports seasons.
“Upgrading our venues with a focus on student-athlete and fan experience continues to be a top priority for us at the University of Maryland,” said Damon Evans, the Barry P. Gossett Director of Athletics. “In unveiling this massive new state-of-the-art videoboard and high-tech sound system at XFINITY Center, Maryland Athletics continues to be on the cutting edge with the best technology in the nation. We continue to invest in our programs demonstrating that Maryland Athletics is leading boldly with the newest innovations and this videoboard at XFINITY Center will be one of the best in the nation, a showpiece we can all be proud of.”
Centerhung System Details
Each main video display will measure 18 feet high by roughly 21 feet wide and will seamlessly connect with the four corner displays that measure 18 feet high by nearly 4 feet wide for a continuous viewing experience inside the XFINITY Center. Each display will feature 3.9-millimeter pixel spacing to deliver crisp, clear imagery to Terps fans in every seat.
These displays will be capable of variable content zoning allowing each to show one full video image facing each side of the arena. Each display can also show additional zones of content such as game information and statistics, graphics and animations, replays, and sponsor messages.
The underbelly displays will each measure nearly 6 feet high by 16.5 feet wide and will each feature 3.9-millimeter pixel spacing. These displays cater to those sitting closer to the action while providing similar information as the main display with similar functionality. Working together, these displays allow the university to provide all the information and statistics that fans expect and crave during live events.
“We’re excited to once again partner with the University of Maryland to provide our state-of-the-art products and technology,” says Fran Kulas, Daktronics sales representative. “XFINITY Center is a special venue and Daktronics is thrilled to play such an integral role in enhancing the student-athlete and fan experience.”
Integrated into the video and scoring system will be a custom Daktronics audio system. This system will provide fans with a booming audio experience while also delivering clear sound as announcers and others speak through the system to keep fans informed of the events taking place.
Daktronics is also including a complete Show Control solution including Camino with this installation. This industry-leading control system provides a combination of display control software, world-class video processing, data integration and playback hardware that forms a powerful yet user-friendly production solution. The addition of Camino to the control system will provide a new level of functionality to create dynamic real-time rendered content never before possible in a Daktronics system.
Camino opens up creative possibilities to display visuals in a 2D/3D space, incorporating data-based logic to automate production elements, and developing timelines within a single piece of content so it can react in real time as the event unfolds.
Included in the equipment installation, the University of Maryland will also receive a content package to be produced and delivered by Daktronics Creative Services.
