  3. Identify if there are custom EDID's (This will need to be escalated if so.)
  4. Backup any custom fonts.  How do I install additional fonts?
  5. Take note of each computer's name and work group.

How to use the Windows 10 Upgrade Kit

  4. The application will gather some info and present the following info screen:
*Note the section that says update found.  If this section says "no" there isn't a compatible image on the drive for this system.
    win10grade2a.png
      1. If an image is not found, and the user continues, they will be presented with the following screen:
        win10grade3.png
  5. The application will give the option of backing up the content / configuration. Choose Y.    If the system has a RAID, it will offer to back up configuration only.
The image below shows the view when RAID not detected.

The image below shows the view with the RAID is detected.

  6. Do you wish to backup your content and config? Click Y.

    1. Select the location where backups will be sent.
      • Note: You do not need to use your own thumbdrive. Use the provided thumb drive for the Windows 10 upgrade.
        win10grade5.png
    2. Based on the option chosen, the user will be presented with all of the available items in the category type that they chose.  (In this case all USB drives)

  7. The backup process will start.

    1. This will create and backup everything to a folder called DKBACKUP. This may take a few minutes to backup
      win10grade7.png

    2. After the backup process completes, the following screen will appear.  Press any key to reboot the computer. (keep thumb drive inserted.)win10grade8.png
Reimage the computer.

After reboot, the following screen will appear.  By default, it will go into the recovery environment, but the user can select the "Windows Embedded" Option if they have any last-minute changes they need to make.

Tech note: The upgrade process may fail and produce a black unresponsive machine with Avocent 5xxx series KVM and DI/VP connections connected on first reboot after install. If this happens, remove the KVM after the ghost installer finishes and reseals. Use the pull out monitor (on rack) on first boot and then once it comes up, return to the Avocent.

*Note, this menu will always appear until update is complete.

  3. From the Local breakout, choose Disk - From Disk.
  4. Navigate to the .gho file found on the usb stick.
  5. Point to the destination drive C.
  6. Choose the (a.) SSD partition, followed by the (b.) System Reser[ved] drive, and (c.) wait for ghost image to complete.  (Two images attached for choosing the (a.) SSD partition and choosing the (b.) System Reserved] to review selecting the correct options.)
    • Note: Newer WIN 10 Upgrade Thumbdrives may automate this process. If it does skip to step 8.

  8. After reseal completes, reboot the computer.
  9. After reboot the following menu will appear:
    • Note - If you get a popup that does not look like the picture below asking about drive selection, select the cancel option and the window below should come up.
  10. win10grade14.png.jpg.png
  11. If there is a backup available, and an offline updater is found, both options will be present.  If either of those items are missing, the corresponding menu item will be removed.
  12. Option 1 should be chosen first.  The will bring up the restore menu.  If there were multiple updates on the drive they will all be listed here.  If the backup was done to a network drive, make sure that it is mounted as the same drive letter before attempting restore.

Tech Note: The Restore Backups command or a Manual Restore of the Config seemed to change the computer name but Windows 10 didn't like it. We had to go in to each 8000 interface, add a character (so we changed D8Main-P to D8Main-P1, then rebooted, then changed back to D8Main-P) to get things to take with the proper names.

  13. The restore process will begin.
    win10grade16.png
  14. After the restore process is complete, choose option 2.  This will install the necessary Daktronics software.
    win10grade17.png
  15. The offline updater should start.  Depending on the system that is updating there may be some interactive portions to this.
    win10grade18.png
    win10grade19.png
    win10grade20.png
  16. After updater is complete, quit the menu.  Win10 migration is now complete.
    win10grade21.png
Finish the update.
  1. Allow any windows updates to complete.
  2. Set up any EDIDs if they were existing previously.   (work with escalation to complete.)
  3. VCS users registered in VCS will need to re-register because the GUID changed.
  4. Configure Display Groups  How do I configure DMP Striping via HTML web interface?
  5. Add any custom FONTS. How do I install additional fonts?
  6. Re-pin the computers in Bomgar if they were previously pinned.

Tech Note: Every 8000 required us to go in and re-select the display output device (likely because the edid and display grouping caused issues.) It worked better to turn off 8000 from the interface, setup displays - etc.. Then when turned on, it locked in the output device. I think it is because sometimes the player launches before we got all the output devices setup and set to correct resolutions.
