Windows could not start the SQL server (Nucleus) on local computer. Error code -2146885628

Potential Symptoms

  • SQL service cannot be started and shows the following error message:
    • "Windows could not start the SQL Server (NUCLEUS) on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service specific error code -2146885628."

Cause

  • The name of the computer has been changed and does not match the name in the SQL certificate.

Resolution

  1. Save Nucleus database DD1705994: How do I use the Nucleus Server Database utility to transfer or save a database?
  2. Uninstall SQL, following DD3522855: How to remove/uninstall SQL Server 2005, 2008 or 2014.
  3. Uninstall Venus 1500  DD2774844: How to uninstall Venus 1500 V4
