Handheld controller screen blank, Incorrect contrast settings.

Potential Symptoms

  • RC-100/RC-200 appears to not be turning on.
  • RC-100 or FLR-500 screen is blank or very difficult to see.
  • RC-100 or FLR-500 handheld buttons are still beeping, but screen is blank.
  • RC-100 or FLR-500 handheld buttons are beeping, but screen just has black/dark bar going across screen.

Environment

  • Product Family: Sports Product, Digit and Price Displays
  • Product: Scoreboard (LED), Gas Price Display
  • Component:
  • Control System: RC-100 handheld, FLR-500 handheld

Cause

  • Contrast is set all the way down (blank screen), or all the way up (dark bar).
  • LCD monitor on handheld has failed.

Note:  When powering off the handheld (holding On/Off button for 5 seconds), if the display is blank, there should be a line that flashes on the screen which may indicate screen is still functioning. If no line flashes on the screen, then the LCD monitor may be bad.

Resolution

  • Replace with an RC-100 handheld with firmware version 3.1.

Note: The changes in this version set a maximum and minimum LCD contrast so the screen cannot be set too dark or too light.  The set contrast menu also displays the current contrast level as a number from  zero - to the maximum (0A-1110-0053=max 38; 0A-1110-0033=max 23).

For Temporary Operation

Note:  It will be hard to determine if the handheld is connecting to the base station since no information can be examined on handheld.  However, if one can see the diagnostic LEDs on the server radio receiver base station, the Amber IN RANGE light should be lit.

Directions If Handheld Is Connecting to Board

  1. Start with the handheld off (buttons shouldn't beep); if buttons are beeping hold the On/Off button for 5 seconds and then wait 10 seconds.
  2. Press On to power on the handheld.
  3. Allow time for it to connect to the base station (about 10 seconds).
  4. Press and hold Config for about 5 seconds.
  5. Press the Down Arrow once.
  6. Press Enter.
    • Screen blank: Press the Up Arrow repeatedly to increase the contrast until you can see the screen again.
    • Screen has dark bar: Press the Down Arrow repeatedly to lower the contrast until good character definition.
  7. Press Enter to confirm settings.
  8. If this does not fix the issue, RC-100 LCD monitor has failed and the controller will need to be replaced.
