Nucleus Service could not be started; Windows Updates needed

Potential Symptoms

  • Unable to open Venus 1500. It says "Nucleus Service can't be started" and then asks for credentials.
  • The Nucleus service hasn't started even though:
    • There may be no errors in the Nucleus error log.
    • There is nothing odd in the Nucleus system log.
    • Computer meets Venus 1500 minimum requirements.
    • The Nucleus Service is set to Automatic.
    • Running the program as Administrator can't get it to start.
  • May receive error "Unable to launch service" when loading V1500.
  • Restart to finish installing important updates present in Windows Update.
  • Most recent check for updates: Never, present in Windows Update.

Cause

  • The computer has Windows updates that are not installed.

Resolution

  • Install the updates. 
    • Windows 10 may automatically install updates without an opt-out prompt when "Check for updates" is clicked, consider asking the customer for permission before checking for updates.
