Audio: No signal is present at analog to digital converter in the fiber box

Topic

  • How do I troubleshoot no signal present in the fiber box?

Environment

  • SSR-100, SSR-200, SSR-300
  • 500HD, 1500HD, 2000HD

Steps

Check to make sure that the mixer meters are displaying output and not a different signal:
  1. SSR-200 Make sure that the PFL Active light is off by unselecting any PFL buttons on the mixer channels.
  2. SSR-300
    1. Gen I  Make sure that the Solo light is off by pressing the Solo Clear button.
    2. Gen II make sure that the CLEAR CUE light/button is off by pressing the CLEAR CUE button
  3. The SSR-100
    1. Gen I only has an Overload indicator for the output and no actual meter.
    2. Gen II has an output meter
    3. Gen III has an output meter for each output
  4. The Announcer's console meter only shows output.
Use a 1kHz tone and set the mixer up to test the mixer output.
  1. If there is no signal present at the mixer output meter, verify mixer setup and input source is working correctly
    1. See SSR-100 Gen I Guide
    2. See SSR-100 Gen II Guide
    3. See SSR-100 Gen III Guide
    4. See SSR-200 Gen I Guide
    5. See SSR-200 Gen II Guide
    6. See SSR-300 Gen I Guide
    7. See SSR-300 Gen II Manual
  2. If signal is present at the mixer output meter, with signal still playing:
    1. Verify the rack signal switch is turned on if present.
    2. Check the output AC voltage between the + and - pins, this should be between .5 Volt AC and 1 Volt AC. Adjust the mixer level accordingly:
      1. Test the signal level at the output of the rack:
        1. For the SSR-100
          1. Gen I, this is the MAIN OUT (B) jack.
          2. Gen II, this is the MAIN OUT (B) jack.
          3. Gen III, this is the MAIN OUTPUT (OUT 1) jack.
        2. For the SSR-200 this is the AUDIO OUT Jack.
        3. For the SSR-300
          1. Gen I, this can be done at the System Out card BOP1, ST OUT L in the back of the rack.
          2. Gen II, this can be done at the output of the mixer snake
      2. If there is no voltage at the output of the rack, check the pins on the mixer output:
        1. If there is no output voltage at the mixer output, while the meters show signal out and the pfl/solo light is off(if present), replace the mixer.
        2. If there is output voltage at the mixer output, check the wiring in the rack and make sure all the connectors are firmly seated.
        3. Reconnect the harness cable to the mixer output.
    3. Connect the cable from the control rack output to the fiber box and confirm it is firmly seated.
    4. Check the AC voltage at the analog to digital converter.
      1. For the EMOD, check that the signal LEDs on input A show incoming signal:
        1.  If not, take out the XLR and measure and see if voltage matches the voltage at the mixer.
        2.  If there is voltage at the XLR but it doesn't show signal on the signal LEDs:
          1. Check that the input gain on the EMOD is turned up to approximately 1 o'clock.
          2. If there is still no signal on the signal LEDs, but there is voltage at the XLR, replace the EMOD.
      2.  For the Biamp, measure the input and see if voltage matches the voltage at the mixer.
If there is still no signal or voltage at the analog to digital converter:
  1. Check if audio starts working when the analog backup switch is set to ANALOG/ON:
    1. If so, see Audio System Only Works With Analog Backup Turned On, Incorrect Fiber Box Wiring to check the fiber box switch wiring.
  2. Test the cable between the rack output and fiber box:
    1. If this cable tests bad, replace the cable.
  3. Check terminations and cabling in the fiber box and replace as needed.
