Data Studio: How to use excel as a data source?

Microsoft Excel Worksheet Requirements: 

Steps

Upload the Microsoft Excel Worksheet to a local server.

This must be navigable from Data Studio.
Copy the path of the file for future use.

Configure File Data Source

  1. Login to Data Studio and choose Data Sources from the left side menu. 
  2. Click Add Data Source and select file from the drop down. 
    1. Add a descriptive Name. This is what will be seen in Content Studio's Dynamic Data Library dropdown.
    2. For Path, paste the file's location. 
    3. The format is Excel. This should automatically fill in once your cursor leaves the path box if it can detect the file.

Configure Feed 

  1. Click Add Feed.
  2. Feed Name = Best practice is to use the worksheet tab name but can be anything. This shows up as the top-level folder in Content Studio.
  3. Worksheet Name = Worksheet (Choose tab name.)
  4. Add Item.
    • Add Range if there is a group of cells that need to be added.
    • Add Cell to add an individual cell.
    • Multiple items can be added from the same worksheet.

Add Range
  1. Fill in the name of the item. For example, "Names" as in our example since we are selecting a list of names.
  2. Give the range of values. A1:A13, for example.

Orientation

Define the direction of the data flow in respect to the headers.

Header

My table contains a header refers to whether or not the table has a header included in the data set.

If your table has headers, checking this box will show the header in the content editor. 
For the best editing experience, create 2 feeds.  
1st- Select the single row of headers and do no check the contains headers box. 
2nd- Select the entire table, including the headers.  

  1. Add Cell 
    1. Fill in the name
    2. Enter the value for the cell. 
  2. Save the Configured Feed.

Add any additional feeds as necessary.

  1. Save the Configured Data Source.

  2. Verify Feed. After saving the feed, there should be a paper clip icon to select to verify the feed.

  3. Refresh in Content Studio's Dynamic Data Library to see the new feed for content creation.
