Venus Control Suite Data Studio: How do I use Excel as a data source on a local server?

This article explains how to use a Microsoft Excel file as a data source in Data Studio on a local system. This workflow uses a locally stored Excel file to provide data for content and data-driven displays.

Environment

  • Product Family: Show Control System (SCS)
  • Product: Data Studio (Local Install)
  • Component: DMP-8000, Microsoft Excel Data Source
  • Control System: Show Control System (SCS) version 2.18+

 

Microsoft Excel Requirements

Steps

▶️Use the arrows to expand or collapse each section. 

Upload the Excel File to a local server
  1. Upload the Microsoft Excel worksheet to a local server
  2. Ensure the file is accessible from Data Studio
  3. Copy the file path for use during setup
Configure File Data Source and Source Details
  1. Log into Data Studio and select Data Sources from the left-side menu
  2. Click Add Data Source and select File from the dropdown
    1. Enter a Name: Add a descriptive Name. This is what will be seen in Content Studio's Dynamic Data Library dropdown.
    2. Enter the Address: Paste the file's path. 
    3. Confirm the format: The format should automatically detect as Excel.

Configure Feed

Select Data Properties

  1. Under Feeds, click the to select data properties
  2. Check the fields you want to use
  3. Select the pencil icon to edit source details
    • Feed Name
      • Best practice: use the worksheet tab name
      • Appears as the top-level folder in Content Studio
    • Output By
      • Select Rows if your data is organized by rows
    • Include Headers
      • Recommended: Yes
