Lighting Up Ithaca: How Park Outdoor and Daktronics Brought the Region’s First Digital Billboard to Life

With the help of Daktronics LED technology, Park Outdoor launched a double-sided digital billboard that now commands attention at a high-traffic intersection just outside the city. The board delivers 15,800+ daily impressions, supports instant content updates, and is already attracting a diverse mix of advertisers, from local BBQ joints to New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG).
“The location of the billboard is outstanding,” said Kerry Leipold of Park Outdoor. “It’s angled perfectly to meet DOT requirements while maximizing exposure. It’s all in the angles.”

Overcoming Obstacles, Building for the Future
The journey to installation wasn’t easy. The original site was denied due to DOT regulations. The team had to relocate, redesign, and even remove three static billboards to make the site work, all while coordinating with a future pedestrian bridge project.
But the result was worth it: A strategically placed, community-conscious digital display that’s built to last.
Community First
Park Outdoor isn’t just selling ad space. They’re supporting the community. The company regularly donates screen time to fire departments, police, and public service campaigns. One slot on the new board is even reserved for promoting a book written by Park Outdoor’s owner.
“We take care of city organizations like fire departments and police, usually free,” said Leipold.
This blend of business value and civic responsibility is what sets Park Outdoor apart – and it’s one reason Daktronics is proud to be their technology partner.
The relationship between the two companies is strong, built on trust and support.
“Why would we even consider another vendor?” asks Leipold.
The Future of OOH in Upstate NY
With 47 digital faces, 19 of which are located in the Finger Lakes Division, Park Outdoor is leading the charge in digitizing Upstate New York’s advertising landscape.
