Ping Request TTL Expired in Transit, Using D-Link, Set Interface Metric Manually

Potential Symptoms

  • "Unable to connect to the display" alert on Venus 1500.
  • Unable to communicate to display with M2Config.
  • Unable to ping the display IP.
    • Ping fails with message: "Reply from *Network_IP*: TTL expired in transit."

Environment

  • Product Family: Message Displays
  • Product: Galaxy display, AF-3550
  • Component: Customer computer Network Interface Card (NIC), Windows 7 PC.
  • Control System: Venus 1500 version 4, V1500 v4

Cause

  •    Venus 1500 is attempting to connect to the display via the NIC that the customer uses for Internet service instead of the D-Link USB-Ethernet adapter that the display is connected to.

Resolution

  1. Open the Start Menu.
  2. Type ncpa.cpl in the search bar and hit Enter.
  3. Double-click on the D-Link adapter.
    • Usually comes up as "Unidentified network".
  4. On the Ethernet Status window, click on Properties.
  5. On the Ethernet Properties windows, double click on Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4).
  6. Click on Advanced... in the properties window.
  7. Uncheck Automatic metric and set the Interface Metric value to 1.
  8. Click Ok on each of the windows until you get to the Ethernet Status where you will click on Close.
  9. Repeat steps 3-8 for the other NIC's present, but set their Interface Metric values to larger numbers such as 100.
