Data Studio Basketball: NCAA XML data is lagging; interval faster than file delivery

Potential Symptoms

  • NCAA XML data is lagging with Data Studio NCAA BB.

Environment

  • Product: Data Studio | NCAA Basketball (Oct 2019 release) Versions before 19.10.3104
  • Component: 64 bit machines
  • Control System: NCAA LiveStats (NLS for Volleyball), StatCrew XML, Genius Sports)
The read interval is configured in Data Studio Basketball/ Data Providers / NCAA XML Provider Configuration.

Cause

  • The first release of Data Studio NCAA Basketball had an interval issue that caused the NCAA XML Provider to poll data in milliseconds vs seconds. When configured as 5, the data attempts to poll at .005 seconds vs 5 seconds.
    • If the interval is faster than the file can be delivered, a queue of unprocessed files could cause data to lag.

Resolution

  1. Update Data Studio to the latest version.  Version 19.10.3104 or later
  2. Navigate to Data Studio Basketball/ Data Providers / NCAA XML Provider Configuration.
  3. For new updates, the poll interval will be listed as'-1' .This value will need to be saved as something between 0 and 120.
    See details below:
Under Read Interval, enter a time (in seconds) of how often the file should be read; leaving this set to 0 will update every time the file changes. However, 0 only works if the file is on the same computer as the software and not on a network drive or hosted online.
    1. For local files, 2-5 seconds is recommended.
    2. For internet-based files, 6-10 seconds is recommended.
Be careful not to set the interval faster than the file can be delivered, or a queue of unprocessed files could cause data to lag. The more reliable the internet connection, the more frequent the Read Interval may be.

Note: The latest version only allows for poll interval values to be saved between 0 and 120. This error is shown in the following image:

  4. Click Save to save changes.
  5. Under the Data Provider's page, click again on the NCAA mode to transact/save the changes.
  6. Wait for the Green Check to indicate the changes have been applied.

  7. Restart the service or computer.

For Temporary Operation

  • Change the poll interval to a larger number.  Instead of 1, use 1000.  (This only works on the first release.)
