SQL setup hangs on install, enable Windows 7 switchback feature
Potential Symptoms
- SQL install hangs at SqlEngineDBStartConfigAction_install_configrc_Cpu32, at the end of the installation with no installation errors.
- Event Viewer may show an Application Hang error, Event ID 1002: The program rundll32.exe version 6.1.7600.16385 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Action Center control panel.
- Computer is part of a Domain that has Group Policies set.
Environment
- Product Family: Software
- Product: Galaxy, Galaxy Pro
- Component: V4.22.3, SQL 2014, Windows 7
- Control System: Venus 1500 V4
Cause
-
A Group Policy setting named "Turn off Switchback Compatibility Engine" is configured to disable the Switchback feature. When Switchback is overridden it causes the OS to always give all applications the new Windows behavior. If overridden, it will cause SQL Server Clients to show a hang during installation. This issue may also present itself whenever an application calls for a SQL Connection.
Resolution
- Work with IT to adjust Group Policies to enable or turn on the Switchback Compatibility Engine for all computers or set a rule for the computer that the Venus Software is installed on.
For Temporary Operation
- The Switchback feature can be enabled by editing the computer Registry (Regedit).
- This option should only be performed by an IT professional and with their permission. Editing the registry can cause damage to the OS settings if they are not adjusted correctly.
- Click on the Start menu and type in REGEDIT in the search bar.
- Access the Switchback feature by navigating to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\AppCompat.
- Click on AppCompat, in the window to the right locate SbEnable, right click and choose MODIFY.
- Under Value Data change the value from 0 to 1.
- Uninstall any instances of SQL on the computer following: How to remove/uninstall SQL Server 2005, 2008 or 2014.
- Reboot the computer and install SQL 2014 and Venus V4.
