How to send file for mixed mod firmware update

Potential Symptoms

  • Customer updated a module in the sign and now all or a few modules aren't outputting data.
  • Modules are locked up /  frozen unable to play message.
  • VFC-3000 doesn't have support for mixed mod firmware updating. (Note this only affects the VFC-3000, and not the VFC controller. The VFC can update mixed mods.)

Environment

  • Product Family: Transportation
  • Product: Vanguard
  • Component: Triton & CCR 16X16 OR 24x16 20MM module type, DFTP Software, Programming board.
    • Mod Part # 0P-1332-8330 alternate 0P-1971-4200 (firmware update required when mixing mods in the same sign)

    • 0P-1332-8352 alternate 0P-1971-4600

  • Control System: VFC-3000 controller

Cause

  • Customer has 2 module types in a single display, because the display was sold with a TRITON type module and future design was changed to a CCR module.

Resolution

16X16 MODULE & 24X16 MODULE INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Download the following files from Dakfiles.daktronics.com & save them to your desktop.
  2. Use DFTP software to send the files to the VFC-3000 controller.
  3. Double check that you have just updated the VFC-3000 to Rev V1.9.4588.52, as this version allows for both module firmware's to be sent via the controller.
  4. Send the CCR firmware first, then send the Triton firmware.
    1. Login to the VFC-3000.
    2. Select Configuration.
    3. Select System Configuration.
    4. Select Reprogram Devices.
    5. Select Reprogram Modules.
    6. Select DD30387618_VFC3000_production_bootload.
    7. Select Detect (Recommended).
    8. Wait for file to send.
    9. Once file is 100% complete, select any key to continue.
    10. Select DD2325016.hex
    11. Select Detect (Recommended).
    12. Wait for file to send.
    13. Once file is 100% complete, select any key to continue.
    14. Select DD2320510.bin
    15. Select Detect (Recommended).
    16. Wait for file to send.
    17. Once file is 100% complete, select any key to continue.
    18. Go to Diagnostics, Test Patterns, Module ID & check that all mods have the same revision on them. It may take a few tries to get all the modules to take the update first or second time.
