No inbound connection to Billboard, ISP preventing port forwarding

Potential Symptoms

  • No inbound connection to Billboard equipment using port forwarding, but control equipment such as the VLink, VIP, and DMP are showing a connection in IDM and VCS/Visiconn.
  • Public IP on the modem may change whenever it is power cycled.
  • DMZ or appropriate forwarding settings are configured correctly between the modem and the Daktronics router.

Cause

  •    ISP 4G network restricting port forwarding on modems with a dynamic public IP.
    • Verizon and AT&T use a method of networking called Carrier-Grade NAT, which NATs a large area of networks under a single public IP to conserve IPv4 addresses. This method of networking does not allow port forwarding.

Resolution

For AT&T as ISP:

  1. Purchase a static IP from AT&T.
  2. Set the APN on the modem to i2gold

For Verizon as ISP:

  1. Purchase static IP from Verizon.
  2. Set appropriate APN on modem for static IPs as outlined in Unable to get online through cellular modem, Wrong Verizon APN set, 000009903.

               

For Temporary Operation

  • Pin the DMP in BOMGAR and access webcam and control devices from the local network.
