Steps

Shure SM58 and similar microphones with removable grille

  1. Carefully remove the grille
    1. Grab the microphone just beneath the grille and turn the grill counter-clockwise to unscrew it, make sure the two parts of the body don't come unscrewed from each other.

  2. The grille can then be cleaned using water and a mild detergent like dishwashing soap.
    Do not use any liquids to clean non-removable grilles or parts
  3. If there is material stuck in the grille use a toothbrush with soft bristles.
  4. Let the grille dry completely before re-attaching to the microphone to prevent moisture damage.

 
Lavalier and head-worn microphones
  1. If there is a removable foam windscreen, carefully remove it and clean using water mixed with a mild detergent
  2. To clean the grille that is not removable under the windscreen, hold the microphone upside down and carefully scrub the grille with a soft bristle toothbrush.  Do not use any liquids to clean non-removable grilles or parts

  1. Locate the set screws (2) at the base of the removable grille and remove them.

  2. The grille can then be removed and cleaned using water and a mild detergent like dishwashing soap.
