Galaxy Display (M2 & M3), Continually locks up and requires a power cycle to communicate, High network traffic

Potential Symptoms

  • Display loses communication frequently and requires a power cycle to regain communication.
    • Power cycling display will bring communication back, but display communication will lock up again.
  • Continually need to reboot sign to restore communication to display.

Environment

  • Product Family: Message Displays
  • Product: Galaxy
  • Component: M2 or M3 controller
  • Control System: Venus 1500 V4  

Cause

  • Public or heavier network traffic is causing the controller communication to lock up.

Resolution

  • Minimize network traffic that is hitting the controller.
    • Verify the sign IP(s) appear as trusted IP's on your network.
    • Consider putting the display on its own, separate network or VLAN.

Warning: Misuse of the M2Config utility can render your sign inoperable.

Disable Ping
Step 1: Power cycle the display.

Step 2: Install M2Config. Follow How to download & install the M2Config Utility on your computer, DD2059662.

Step 3: Connect to the display using M2Config: Follow How To Connect To My Galaxy Display Using The M2Config Utility, DD2342173.

Step 4: Use M2Config to disable ping on the controller.

  • After connection is established, go to the Configuration tab & click the Communications folder.

  • Click Security.
  • Uncheck Respond to PING command.  This will disable the controller from being able to have a ping response.
  • Click the blue down arrow to set configuration or click on File and then Set Configuration.
