Unable to ping external websites or DNS servers, ICMP Port 1 being blocked

Potential Symptoms

  • Unable to ping external websites (e.g. google.com) or DNS servers (e.g. 8.8.8.8).
  • "Upload Error (Runtime Log)" event on the VNet/DMP-8000 in IDM.

Environment

  • Sierra Wireless CDMA modem (could happen with other modems as well)
    • CDMA modems typically have a public IP that starts with 166.###.###.###
  • Modem equipped with Outbound Port Filtering feature
  • DMP-8000

Cause

  • ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) is being blocked.

Resolution

  • ICMP is assigned protocol number (port) 1.  "ICMP differs from transport protocols such as TCP and UDP in that it is not typically used to exchange data between systems, nor is it regularly employed by end-user network applications (with the exception of some diagnostic tools like ping and traceroute)." - Wikipedia.
  1. If outbound port filtering is enabled, add port 1 as an allowed port.
  2. Apply setting and reboot the modem to store the setting permanently.

Work Around

  1. Disable outbound port filtering (set it to Not Used).
  2. Apply settings and reboot the modem to store the settings permanently.
