Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express SP3 (x86 & x64Wow) - Nucleus has failed.

Potential Symptoms

  • When installing SQL Server 2008, receive the following error, and installation rolls back.
  • "The installation of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express SP3 (x86 & x64Wow) - Nucleus has failed. Setup will now exit".

Environment

Cause

  • Wrong installation of SQL 2008 (64 bit).

Resolution

  1. Uninstall any components installed for Microsoft SQL 2008 following: How to remove/uninstall SQL Server 2005, 2008 or 2014.
  2. Follow How to Install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Manually for Venus 1500 v4, Vanguard v4, or Display Studio v1 for complete Installation directions.
    • Make sure to choose SQLEXPR_x86_ENU.exe.
    • This is the only installer that can be manually installed, you cannot download or use any other type of Microsoft SQL Server 2008.
