There is gap between my trumpet horn and scoreboard face, Is this a concern?

Potential Symptoms

  • When installing a trumpet horn on an outdoor scoreboard, there is gap (less than 1") between the trumpet horn tube and edge of the horn punch out. 
  • Is this cause for concern (i.e. will this be a source of water intrusion)?
  • Did the horn get installed wrong?

Resolution

  1. The gap is normal and is there to prevent trumpet horn vibrations from coupling into the front of the scoreboard cabinet (i.e. the horn did not get installed wrong).
  2. If the hole is too small, horn sound quality and amplitude of the horn sound will be significantly affected by having its vibrations coupled into the scoreboard cabinet.
  3. Additionally the horn is tilted downwards to minimize water intrusion (i.e. water/rain that collects on the horn should drip off the end of the horn rather than be funneled into the scoreboard).
  4. Also note that the scoreboard is water shedding which means any water that does makes its way into the scoreboard will be let out.
  5. Typically the horn is installed where there are no components directly below the horn, so again even if there is water that enters in through the gap in the horn punch out, the water should not affect anything.
  6. Lastly newer scoreboards have completely weather sealed digits.
