When installing Microsoft SQL Server 2008 receive error 'The installation of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express SP3 - Nucleus has failed. Setup will now exit.": exit code 10
Potential Symptoms
- When installing Venus 1500 v4.18 or greater receive error
- "The installation of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express SP3 (x86 & x64Wow) - Nucleus has failed. Setup will now exit."
- The Microsoft SQL Server Bootstrap summery log shows the following error:
LOG File found at C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log.
- Choose the folder with the latest date and open the Summery.txt file and look for following error.
Exit error code: 10
The account that is running SQL Server Setup does not have one or both of the following rights: the right to back up files and directories, and the right to manage auditing and the security log. To continue, use an account with both of these rights.
Environment
- Venus 1500 v4.18 or greater
- Windows 7 or higher
Cause
- Group policy settings for user account need to be adjusted to install software under current user account.
Resolution
Steps below would normally be performed by IT department (Note: these group policy settings are only needed during installation of SQL, so can just use workaround).
- Use the Microsoft articles listed to adjust group policy settings for user (will typically need to be logged in as an Administrator to adjust).
- Launch the Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc).
- Navigate to Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\User Rights Assignment.
- Add the user account that normally use the software to:
- Manager auditing and security log.
- Back up files and directories.
- May possibly need to adjust auditing policies as well (Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Audit Policy).
Work Around
- Install SQL Server while logged in as an Administrator.
