Do I need to use 1 ought wiring to bring power to a Galaxy display?

Topic

  • Do I need to use 1 ought wiring to bring power to a Galaxy display?

Environment

  • Galaxy
  • Electronic Message Center (EMC) or Board (EMB), Marquee, Readerboard, Display

Steps

  • 1/0 (ought) wiring should not be used to bring power to a Galaxy display.  The picture below is of the label we place on the power junction box on the back of our displays.

  • The ø symbol does not represent ought.
  • The 1ø service indicates 1 Phase service; the ø symbol is the capital Greek letter Phi representing phase.

    • In other words, one will NOT hook up both phases or hot lines to the same circuit to run on 240 VAC.
    • Everything will run on low line 120 VAC voltage (i.e. 1 hot line per circuit with the neutral being shared between the circuits).
  • The electrician needs to select an appropriate gauge of wire that delivers full-load power to the display while maintaining a voltage within 5 percent of the nominal voltage.
  • Below you will find an example of some common gauge wires and their respective power ratings.
