What surge suppressors/protectors are available for outdoor Galaxy displays?

Contact an local electrician/electrical contractor for options.  Daktronics does not offer any surge suppressors/protectors for outdoor Galaxy displays.

Additional Notes:

  • Message Center displays will have internal breaker(s) that will trip.
    • This would occur if a hot wire got shorted to ground or an internal short occurred.
    • Breakers will not help with transient voltage spikes/surges which tend to only last in the order of micro seconds (10-6 seconds) that may occur on the electrical grid.
  • The display should also have a ground rod installed; resistance to ground should be less than 10 ohms.
    • The ground rod will prevent static charges from building up on the outside cabinet which can cause peculiar/various issues and also helps to minimize damage with direct lightning strikes.
    • Ground rods don't make a display lightning proof, but rather help to direct the majority of the current/voltage away from the delicate semi-conductor components in a display helping to minimize damage.
  • To deal with voltage spikes/surges on the incoming power lines to the display, the only way to make it 100% surge proof would be to take the display off the power grid (i.e. unplug  power/flip the breakers to the off position/disconnect power wires).
