SportSound; Delay from when speaking or singing until hearing the voice

Potential Symptoms

  • When speaking or singing into a microphone there is a lag or delay until when you hear the voice.

Cause

  • The voice is being reproduced at the speaker cabinet as you sing or speak but the sound has to travel to your ear.
  • Speed of sound in dry air at 20 °C (68 °F); the speed of sound is 343.2 meters per second (1,126 ft/s).

Resolution

  1. Announcer console has the option to use a headphone, this allows them to hear their voice as they speak and blocks out the audio coming from the speaker cabinet.
  2. We offer in ear monitors which are normally used by soloists and allow them to hear their voice as they sing but blocks out the audio from the cabinet.
  3. Experienced announcers and singers grow accustomed to the delay.
  4. Plugging one's ears with earplugs or swimmer's wax will help block external sound and resonate internal voice.
