Venus alerts show Invalid Response, garbled loopback test at client; Poor termination

Potential Symptoms

  • Venus is unable to get status to the display although radio J-box is showing that it is transmitting signal.
    • Alert in Venus is Invalid Response.
  • M2config is unable to connect to display, getting Invalid Resonse errors.
  • Unable to communicate to sign even though there is a good loopback test (good signal) to the server radio.
  • Loopback test at the client radio comes back garbled; if using Tera Term for loopback test, some letters come back fine and others are gibberish.
  • Serial radios, Venus unable to get status, garbled loopback test at client radio

Cause

  • Poor wire terminations to client radio.

Resolution

  • Reterminate the signal wires.
    1. Take note of how the phoenix jack (TB1) is wired and write it down.
    2. Power down the display which will turn power off to the client radio.
    3. Using a small precision straight edged screwdriver, loosen the wires and remove them from the terminal block.
    4. Re-strip all 6 wires of the cable.
    5. Place freshly stripped wires back into terminal block in the order they were to begin with and tighten them down.
    6. Turn power back on to the display.
    7. Check communication in Venus to verify connection is restored.
