When trying to save or save as a presentation, receive the following error 'System.ServiceModel.FaultException: Data Access Error: XML Parsing: Line x, character x, illegal xml character'

Potential Symptoms

  • When trying to save or save as a presentation, receive the following error:
    • System.ServiceModel.FaultException: Data Access Error: XML Parsing: Line x, character x, illegal xml character
    • DD2546067 1.jpg
    • When you save the presentation to your desktop or outside of the Database, you get no error.
  • Display is blank with a heartbeat but shows content is running both in Running Presentations Panel and in the Display Status tab.
  • If the message appears on the current schedule and you attempt to publish, you may receive the following alert:
    • ", hexadecimal value 0x01, is an invalid character. Line X, position X.

Environment

  • Venus 1500 v4.19.1 (may happen in earlier versions)

Cause

  • Somewhere within the presentation and in the text, there is a hidden, unreadable character.
    • For example, the text was 89¢, but there were additional characters hidden between 89 and ¢ symbol. Once you delete 89¢, and retype 89 and insert a new ¢ symbol, you are then able to save or save as the presentation. These both cannot be handled in the Database, or out on the display, causing it to play blank.

Resolution

  • Delete message and recreate under the same file name.
