During SQL 2008 install, setting up support rules, get Performance counter registry error

Potential Symptoms

  • During install of Venus 1500 v4.18.1, receive the following error:
    • The installation of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express SP3 (x86 & x64Wow) - Nucleus has failed. Setup will now exit.

  • When browsing to the Setup bootstrap summery.log you see the following error:
    • Windows 32 Bit System: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log
    • Windows 64 Bit System: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log
    • The performance counter registry hive is corrupted. To continue, you must repair the performance counter registry hive. For more information, see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/300956.

  • If manually installing SQL Server 2008, during the Setup Support Rules, you see it failed on Performance counter registry hive consistency.

  • When clicking on Failed, you receive the following error:
    • Rule "Performance counter registry hive consistency" failed.
    • The performance counter registry hive is corrupted. To continue, you must repair the performance counter registry hive. For more information, see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/300956.

Environment

  • Venus 1500 v4
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008

Cause

  • The Registry is corrupted and you cannot install SQL Server until it is resolved.

Resolution

  • Daktronics does not repair or work with the computers Operating Registry. Contact your IT Department or Computer Technician to assist with fixing the corrupted registry.
  • Please reference Microsoft Knowledge Base Article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/300956 listed in the error log for information on how to repair the Registry issue.
