When installing Microsoft SQL Server 2005 receive an error 'The SQL Server service failed to start.' and an error in logs 'Error: 15209, Severity: 16, State: 1. An error occurred during encryption.'

Potential Symptoms

When installing SQL Server 2005 Manually, you receive the following symptoms:
  • When trying to manually install SQL Server 2005 at the end of install receive the following error:
    • The SQL Server service failed to start. For more information, see the SQL Server Books Online topics.
  • When searching in the SQL Server 2005 Setup Bootstrap Summery.log it will direct you to the proper log file location:
    • Setup Bootstrap location for SQL Server 2008 is found in the following location:
      • Windows 32 Bit - C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\Log
      • Windows 64 Bit - C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG

When Installing Venus 1500 v4, you receive the following symptoms:

    • When installing Venus 1500 v4, receive the following error:
      • A Network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)

    • When trying to manually start the SQL Server (NUCLEUS), receive the following error:
      • The SQL Server (NUCLEUS) service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some Services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs.

    When viewing the SQL Server 2005 error logs, you see the following:

    • When in the error log location below, you will see the following error:
      • Typical SQL Install ERRORLOG can be found at the following location, and depending on the Summery, it will indicate the exact error log:
        • Windows 32 Bit - C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\LOG
        • Windows 64 Bit - C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\LOG
      • Error: 15209, Severity: 16, State: 1. An error occurred during encryption.

    Environment

    • Venus 1500 v4
    • Microsoft SQL Server 2005

    Cause

    • When doing a manual install of the SQL Server, the service cannot be started on a Local System. It requires to be setup as a NETWORK SERVICE during the installation.

    Resolution

    1. Follow install process of the SQL Server 2005, How to Install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Manually for Venus 1500 v4, Vanguard v4, or Display Studio v1, DD2187510.
      • For Instruction #12, instead of choosing Local System leave it at NETWORK SERVICE.
    2. Continue through the remaining install process as normal.
