Outdoor scoreboard blank, Hardwired, Surge card causing voltage drop

Potential Symptoms

  • Scoreboard will light for 30 seconds, and then go blank.
  • Getting 13 VDC out of the console.
  • Getting less than 8 VDC at the surge card when wires are connected. Getting 12 volts when disconnected from surge card.​
  • Blank Scoreboard.

Environment

  • Product: Outdoor LED scoreboard
  • Component: Surge Card
  • Control System: All Sport Console

Cause

  •  Surge card causing the voltage to drop at the scoreboard.

Resolution

  • Replace surge card.

For Temporary Operation

  • Bypass surge card by disconnecting the signal in and signal out wires from the surge card and tying them together. This can be easily and reversibly done by moving the Signal In wires from their terminal block on bottom of card, and connecting those directly to the Signal Out terminal block on top of card.
    • Note: Surge cards should only be bypassed temporarily as it has the potential to leave other components vulnerable to power surges.
