How do I troubleshoot error codes in device manager to resolve issues with an adapter?

Potential Symptoms

Troubleshoot error codes in device manager or resolve connection issues with a particular adapter

Environment

  • USB to Ethernet Adapter (DLink)
  • USB to Serial to Serial Adapter (Prolific, Moxa)
  • Other devices 

Resolution

  1. Open up device manager by right-clicking on Computer or My Computer from either the start menu or from an icon on the desktop and select Manage to open up the Computer Management window
  2. Select Device Manger from the left window pane
  3.  Expand the appropriate category for the device on the right window pane (for a USB to Ethernet adapter, expand Network adapters; for a USB to serial adapter, expand Ports (COM &LPT))
  4. Double-click on the particular device or right-click and select Properties to view device status
  5. Check for any error codes

  7. If particular error code is not found try Googling it.
  8. As for general troubleshooting steps, try reseating the connection for the particular device in question at the port it's plugged into.  One can also try disabling and enabling the device in Device Manager and see if the issue resolves.  Sometimes it can be a driver issue (i.e. a particular driver is not compatible with a particular operating system)
