Intermittent or slow connection to Internet and to display using Ethernet based communication

Potential Symptoms

  • Limited connectivity to Internet.
  • Limited connectivity to electronic display.
  • Pinging router with 1000 bytes of data continually returns some replies and some request time outs (ping ###.###.###.### -t -l 1000, where ### is default gateway/router IP).

Environment

  • Galaxy display
  • Ethernet based communication through a network

Cause

  • Suspect network issues, specifically with router.
    • If computer is using a Wi-Fi connection, it could just be a poor Wi-Fi connection.  However if there is a hardwire connection to the router, then issue is either with NIC on computer or it could be a router or switch issue.

Resolution

  1. Cycle power to network equipment.  See if any change.
    • Try doing the same ping test (ping ###.###.###.### -t -l 1000, where ### is default gateway/router IP) from a different computer on the network and checking the Internet connection.  If there are no perceived issues from that computer, then the issue could be with NIC on the computer with the Daktronics software (i.e. Venus 1500, Venus 7000, Show Control, etc.).
  2. If unable to determine the network device causing the issue or resolve the issue, get IT personnel involved.

Work Around

  • If possible do a direct connection from controlling computer to display (i.e. bypassing any network equipment) to verify and restore good communication to the display.  Likely, a static IP will have to be assigned to computer in order to connect to the display.
