Windows 7 Computer Connected to a KVM Produces a Resolution out of Range Error
Potential Symptoms
- When booting up a Windows 7 computer connected to a KVM, the user is presented with the message "Resolution out of Range" or "Out of Range."
Environment
- Windows 7 computer connected to any type of KVM
Cause
- The KVM reports that the monitor input supports a larger resolution than the monitor connected to it can handle. Windows 7 will attempt to take the largest available resolution on bootup until the monitor changes.
- Example:
- LCD Monitor connected to the KVM has a maximum resolution of 1280x1024.
- KVM reports to the Windows 7 computer that the monitor has a maximum resolution of 1600x1200.
- Windows 7 will attempt to take the largest resolution, in this example, the 1600x1200 resolution.
Resolution
- Boot up the Windows 7 computer.
- Repeatedly press the F8 button to access the Advanced Boot Options window.
- Select "Enable low-resolution video (640x480)" option and press Enter.
- Allow the computer to boot up into Windows.
- After Windows boots up, right click on the desktop and select "Screen Resolution."
- Select a resolution that will work for the particular monitor; 1024x768 is recommended.
- Click Apply.
Work Around
- Find a monitor that supports the requested resolution and connect it to the computer.
- Change the resolution as described above in Steps 5 and 6.
- Using Bomgar, VNC or some other remote control software connect to the affected computer.
- Change the resolution as described above in Steps 5 and 6.
