Windows 7 Computer Connected to a KVM Produces a Resolution out of Range Error

Potential Symptoms

  • When booting up a Windows 7 computer connected to a KVM, the user is presented with the message "Resolution out of Range" or "Out of Range."

Environment

  • Windows 7 computer connected to any type of KVM

Cause

  • The KVM reports that the monitor input supports a larger resolution than the monitor connected to it can handle. Windows 7 will attempt to take the largest available resolution on bootup until the monitor changes.
  • Example:
    • LCD Monitor connected to the KVM has a maximum resolution of 1280x1024.
    • KVM reports to the Windows 7 computer that the monitor has a maximum resolution of 1600x1200.
    • Windows 7 will attempt to take the largest resolution, in this example, the 1600x1200 resolution.

Resolution

  1. Boot up the Windows 7 computer.
  2. Repeatedly press the F8 button to access the Advanced Boot Options window.
  3. Select "Enable low-resolution video (640x480)" option and press Enter.
  4. Allow the computer to boot up into Windows.
  5. After Windows boots up, right click on the desktop and select "Screen Resolution."
  6. Select a resolution that will work for the particular monitor; 1024x768 is recommended.
  7. Click Apply.

Work Around

  • Find a monitor that supports the requested resolution and connect it to the computer.
    • Change the resolution as described above in Steps 5 and 6.
  • Using Bomgar, VNC or some other remote control software connect to the affected computer.
    • Change the resolution as described above in Steps 5 and 6.
