Venus 1500 v4 will not launch, no errors in logs or event viewer

Potential Symptoms

  • Venus 1500 v4 will not launch.
  • There will be no errors in Event Viewer or Software logs.
  • Receiving error when launching Venus 1500.
    • Venus 1500 by Daktronics has stopped working. Windows can check online for a solution to the problem.

  • May see the following error in Venus 1500 log file located at the following location:
    • Windows XP - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Daktronics\Venus 1500 V4
    • Windows Vista or 7- C:\ProgramData\DAKTRONICS\Venus 1500 V4
    • Error Message: The type initializer for 'System.Windows.Media.FontFamily' threw and exception.

Environment

  • Venus 1500 (4)
  • Windows XP, Vista or 7

Cause

  • There is a bad font in the registry that has a invalid data path. This can effect both Windows XP, Vista and 7 OS.

  1. Go to the following location:
    • Windows XP - Windows Start Menu -> Run -> type regedit, click Ok
    • Windows Vista\7 - Windows Start Menu -> In search programs and files type regedit, right-click regedit filtered in the start menu and select Run as administrator.
  2. Go to following path in both XP, Vista or 7:
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SOFTWARE -> Microsoft -> Windows NT -> CurrentVersion -> Font
  3. Scroll down until you find two fonts titled Network Access vt220.
    1. You will see the pathway is set as C:\Windows\system32\C:\Windows\Fonts\Vt220.ttf. This is an invalid pathway, if you try to browse to that location on the computer, you will not see a 2nd C drive. (see screen shot below)
  4. Right-click on each font files and choose Modify.
  5. Under Value data remove the bad path C:\Windows\System32\(first part) and leave C:\Windows\Fonts\Vt220.ttf
  6. Click Ok.
  7. Launch Venus 1500 v4 again.
