USB to Ethernet, No connection to sign, Ping Request TTL expired in transit, device manager shows 2 D-link devices one as a miniport packet scheduler

Potential Symptoms

  • Unable to change messages
  • DLink shows up under Network Connections window as a separate connection, but does not show in list of Ethernet Adapters when doing an Ipconfig command from the command prompt.
  • Ping requests to the DLink's IP Address fail, returning the following error: "TTL Expired in transit"
  • Device manager shows 2 DLink devices, one enabled and one disabled.
    • The disabled one is listed as a miniport packet scheduler
  • When viewing the routing table using route print command, there are no entries for the subnet which the DLink is configured for

Environment

  • Galaxy Message Center
  • AF-3500, AF-3550
  • D-Link USB to Ethernet adapter
    • DLink adapter in-use is a replacement for a defective unit
  • Windows XP
  • Venus 1500 Version 4

Cause

  • The TTL expired in Transit error is related to a routing loop problem. Exact cause is unknown, but suspected to be related to residual information for the previously used D-Link adapter still residing within Windows, which prevented the new adapter from being fully recognized by Windows XP.

Resolution

  1. Open Device Manager
  2. Then DLink Miniport packet scheduler should show as disabled, enable it
  3. The DLink Miniport packet scheduler will then disappear
  4. Run a repair on the local area connection created by the DLink adapter
  5. Verify IP address of DLink adapter
  6. Ping IP Address of DLink adapter to verify TTL expired in transit error no longer exists.
