Can't connect to display with modem communication

Potential Symptoms

Cause

  • RJ cable between Quick Connect (QC) card and controller's RS-232 input is bad.

Resolution

  1. Check modem card's diagnostic LEDs.  When in the idle state the modem's diagnostics LED should show power LED "ON" solid; Tx LED "OFF"; Rx LED "OFF"; Carrier Detect "OFF".
  2. On modem card if Rx LED is "ON" solid. This will indicate a diagnostics error that one of the signal cables is bad from the modem card's output to controller's input; possible more than one cabling if quick connect (QC) connection card is being used with modem card in an external enclosure on the display.
  3. Remove the signal cable/cabling from between the modem card's output and controller's input; verify the Rx LED goes "OFF" to confirm error has been removed (reboot is not required to show change).
  4. With modem card's Rx LED now in the "OFF" state troubleshoot the signal cabling is properly pinned, is in good working condition, and quick connect (QC) if used is good.
  5. Bypass quick connect (QC) card and verify Rx LED on modem is still "OFF" with connection directly from modem's output to controller's input.
  6. Verify there aren't additional non-necessary cables connected; possible RJ-11/45 cable from quick connect (QC) to controller in addition to the ribbon cable that supplies both power to modem card and signal to the controller via the quick connect (QC) card.
