Serial Radios, No communication with Galaxy or Fuel Price display, Client radio exhibits low signal strength

Potential Symptoms

  • Client radio may exhibit low signal strength.
  • No communication with the display using Gen 2 or Gen 3 serial radios.
    • Bad command Alert in Venus 1500 V4 when trying to publish content.
  • May experience intermittent communication but with a lot of drop outs.
  • Loopback passes only part of the time or never on the client radio on TB1 (RX to TX) even though loopback passes on TB1 RX to TX of the server radio.

Cause

  • Issue with radio antenna.
    • Antenna is broken, missing, or unplugged from radio.
      • Antenna jack on the PCB has broken off.
    • Antenna on radio is not orientated correctly, not parallel with other radio.
      • Antennas should be vertical and parallel with each other as they communicate off the entire broad side of the antenna.
    • Antenna is bad
      • One sign of a bad antenna is when you plug it into a Client radio the In Range LED and Signal Strength LEDs go dark. But those LEDs will light up with a different antenna.

Resolution

  • Plug in antenna, replace antenna, or orientate antenna vertically.
