AF-6200 / 6300 2V Series Flickering

Potential Symptoms

Flickering is present on an AF-6300 display (generally on the mirror face).  The flickering will consist of unwanted LEDs illuminating that may distort the content.

Environment

Parts Required: W-2072, W-2211 and / or W-2212

Cause

  • 2 View (2V) AF-6300 displays with pixel heights of 32 and higher are prone to the flickering.
  • The flickering is due to improper impedance in the cable which is causing crosstalk on the module signal lines.
  • The 32 pixel high and larger displays require signal cables that are long enough to distort the signals, which causes the flickering effect on the display.  These cables are used to interconnect the two faces of the display which is why the mirror face is usually the affected location.

Resolution

A spec change has been performed on all of the AF-6300 module signal cables.  In the past we used a shielded 15 conductor cable.  From now on these will be 15-pin ribbon cables.  The same connectors are used on the ribbon cable, so there are no changes to the modules.  These cables include W-2069 (4"), W-2070 (18"), W-2071 (30"), W-2072 (36"), W-2211 (48"), and W-2212 (60").
  1. Remove the interconnect cable that is connected to the module row(s) that contain the flicker.
  2. Replace it with the new ribbon cable (they should be labeled with the same part number).
  3. Verify that the flicker is no longer present for that row of modules.
  4. Replace the rest of the interconnect cables even if flickering wasn't present on a particular row.
  5. Place cable ties around the ribbon cables and anchor them to the cable tie cutouts on the module plates.  Do not pinch the ribbon cables by pulling too tight on the cable ties.
Note:  Both cable types can coexist in a display.  When fixing a field issue only the longer cables (W-2072, W-2211, and W-2212) need to be replaced.  However, all cables can be replaced if required.
