DI-4000/DI-6000 Push Button Restore
Topic
Restore a system to a known-good state by physically pressing a button on the system or using a keyboard connected to the system
Environment
- Product: DI-4000, DI-6000 Series Processor
- Control System: Starting with release version Rev 48
Steps
The recovery operation is only available for the first five minutes after the system has booted up. After five minutes, recovery is disabled and any button presses will have no effect.
The following recovery states are possible:
- Default password: the default "Dak" user password for systems that have shipped prior to the time we began storing unique passwords on to systems in manufacturing
- Factory-unique password: the unique password for the "Dak" user that was set in the factory; this password is printed on a sticker attached to the system. If the factory-unique password does not exist, the default password is restored instead.
- Contract configuration: a restore point "_contract" created after contract/customer configuration and after the base restore point was created. The factory-unique or default password is also restored
- Base configuration: a restore point "_base" created at the end of the initial manufacturing process, after the factory-unique password may have been stored and before any contract/customer configuration has been set. The factory-unique password or default password is also restored.
The type of system recovery depends on the length of time the button is pressed. See the table below.
- Press the button using one of these options:
a) USB-connected keyboard with the key combination CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+D
b) DI-4000 physical push button - refer to the image below - Hold the button down for the correct length of time for the desired restore action.
Button Hold Time Status LED Indicator Action Performed 0-5 seconds Solid on No action 5-15 seconds Half-second flash Factory-unique password1,2,4 15-30 seconds Quarter-second flaxh Contract configuration1,3,4 30-45 seconds Tenth-second flash Base configuration1 45+ seconds Normal operation No action
1 When the recovery operation starts, the status LED will turn off; when the recovery is complete, the system will reboot.
2 If a factory-unique password does not exist, the default password is restored instead.
3 If a contract configuration restore point does not exist, the status LED will flash at a tenth-second rate for two seconds; then the base configuration is restored.
4 Before the restore begins, a new "_main_pre_pushbutton_restore" restore point is created in case the user needs to restore this state. It is recommended to delete this restore point once it is no longer needed to free up disk space.
Note: the "_contract" and "_base" snapshots are not allowed to be deleted from the UX. - While holding down the button, check the status LEDs to ensure the restore operation is being performed.
a) USB-connected keyboard - the status LED is the caps lock LED
b) DI-4000 - the heartbeat LED - After the button is released and the recovery is performed, check that the status LED returns to its normal operation.
