Steps
For the inputs:
The first meter is the signal meter. This shows input signal coming into that mixer channel. The meter will show signal whether the channel is ON or OFF
The second meter has two functions depending on how that channel was setup.
- If the meter is fully red without signal but the red jumps up after enough signal appears on that channel, the channel is in Gate mode. A gate prevents audio from passing until the signal hits a set threshold. This helps prevent some feedback or background noise. This is commonly set on the ref mic so that the mic doesn’t pass audio until the referee talks.
- If the meter is black, but the red meter drops down when signal appears on the announcer channel or another channel, the meter is in Ducker mode. This shows that the signal is getting ducked down to allow the microphone to be more intelligible. When the person stops speaking into the microphone, the red line on this channel will jump back up and disappear and audio will come back to full volume.
The third meter is the compressor/limiter. This bar will normally be completely black. Red will start dropping down if the announcer or other channel suddenly speaks loudly and the compressor kicks in to help prevent loud peaks.
If any of the meters are gray, this is saying that that function is bypassed for the channel
For the outputs, there may be one or two signal meters and one compressor/limiter meter.
