Identical Port Numbers Assigned to MOXA USB Serial/COM Ports, Clean Install Drivers

Potential Symptoms

  • After recent Windows Update, COM ports not working as they should
  • When opening Windows Device Manager, COM ports showing Identical assigned COM ports:
  • When opening properties on the com port, showing Error "This device cannot start. Try upgrading the device drivers for this device. (Code 10)"
  • Updating Drivers or reseating the connection does not correct the issue

Environment

Product: MOXA USB Serial to USB 
Component:
Control System: Windows 11

Cause

  • Windows 11 Update caused MOXA USB Serial drivers to have issues with assigning COM Port numbers

Resolution

  1. Right-click each MOXA USB device listed in Ports -> Uninstall -> Check box next to uninstall drivers if prompted
  2. Reinstall drivers fresh with most recent MOXA USB Drivers at https://www.moxa.com/en/products/industrial-edge-connectivity/usb-to-serial-converters-usb-hubs/usb-to-serial-converters/uport-1100-series#resources
  3. Restart PC and verify COM ports now assigned correctly and working as they should

For Temporary Operation

  • In Device Manager under Ports (COM and LPT) :
    • Right click the COM port with the error code -> Properties -> Advanced -> Change port to what the port should be registered as
