Blackmagic Video Assist Tool:How do I verify a signal from a Spyder X20?

Topic

  • How do I verify a signal from a Spyder X20 with the Blackmagic video assist tool?
  • Use this guide to verify a signal out of a Spyder X20 via the Blackmagic Video Assist tool.

Environment

  • Product: Spyder X20
  • Components: Blackmagic video assist tool
  • Control System:

Steps

  1. Power on Video Assist using the power button on the side.
  2. Connect the appropriate cable and connectors for use with the signal you are monitoring. Video connections can be made on the side opposite the power button. There are two (2) DIN 1.0/2.3 and two (2) HDMI connectors for input and output.
    1. There are DVI and SDI inputs and outputs.
      1. Each SDI and DVI connection is numbered and is routed according to the Vista Advanced software.
      2. In some cases, signal converters are placed ahead of the Spyder.  For example, SDI to DVI converters could be used to maximize the number of SDI feeds from sources.spyder1.png
    2. To monitor the input to a Spyder, disconnect the coax cable at the BNC connector at the input of the Spyder and connect that cable to the input of the Video Assist. Remember to check the video format, Spyder does not automatically detect inputs.

    3. To monitor the output from a Spyder, disconnect the coax cable at the BNC connector at the output of the Spyder. Connect the input of the Video Assist to the output connector on the Spyder. Remember to check the video format, to verify the feed is outputting what you are expecting. Pay close attention that the signal size and position matches what is configured for the display.

If no video is seen from the desired output, verify the configuration within the Vista Advanced software application.

Verification Steps

  1. Confirm the command keys are activated for regular operation.
  2. Verify Sources. The numbers depicted on rear panel of Spyder may not match the source number in the Advanced software (i.e. Input 2 connection can be DVI1, Input 3 connection can be SDI2, etc…)
  3. Verify System Patch by confirming red lines connect Source Layers to Outputs (command keys can be used to reset to what was last saved.

Output configuration

  1. Confirm color space and resolution match what the display is configured to receive (refer to control schematic drawing).

  2. Program canvas
    • Use Layer names to guide troubleshooting for which DMP or source is likely to need checking.
    • Confirm Layers are active as programmed by command keys and are in the correct z-order and position (Command keys can be used to reset to what was last saved).
