Bridge and M Series Offline in Venus Control Suite, IP conflict with the Hardware Bridge

Potential Symptoms

  • Bridge and M-Series both show Offline in Venus Control Suite.
  • Hardware Bridge is powered.
  • Power cycling the Bridge doesn't resolve the problem.
  • Bridge is connected to their network with a known good network cable.
  • May not be able to connect to the Hardware Bridge from a local computer
  • If running an (arp -a) command from the command prompt - find that the IP the Bridge was set to is associated to a different MAC address than what is listed on the Bridge itself.

Environment

  • Product Family: Message Displays
  • Product: AF-3200, AF-3400, AF-3500, AF-3550 and AF-3700
  • Component: Hardware Bridge
  • Control System: Venus Control Suite (VCS)

Cause

  • There is another device on the network with the same IP address as the Bridge. This causes a problem called an IP address conflict. Only one of those devices can have connectivity at a given time. The other will be ignored, effectively causing it to behave as if it were disconnected.

Resolution

  • Set the IP address of the Hardware Bridge to an IP not in use on their network or change the IP of the other device.
    • Note: To set the Bridge to a new IP you will likely need to bypass your network and connect directly to it. Follow steps 4-8 of the section "Connect the M-Series Hardware Bridge to a Static IP Address" (page 2) in this manual. You could also set it to obtain an IP address from your network at the same spot.
  • Consult with an IT group to set it up so this issue will not happen again.
