Billboard, "disk boot failure" or "disk read error" on display

Potential Symptoms

  • "Disk boot failure," "disk read error," or "Intel Boot Manager" error showing on display or on a monitor connected to the VNet, power cycling the computer does not resolve the issue.
  • VNet will not boot and is not accessible via VNC or ping, the iBootBar showing "X" under the status.

Cause

  • Computer not reading hard drive, the bundle of wires out of the power supply appears to push against the SATA connector, causing a poor connection.

Resolution

  1. Power-down and remove the computer from the encolsure.
  2. Open the top cover on the computer.
  3. Relocate the SATA cable on the mother board from the port closest to the power supply to the next one in.

  4. Reassemble and install the computer and test.  If this does not resolve the issue the computer will need to be replaced.
