No communication through network; Signs IP address is not compatible with network

Potential Symptoms

  • Unable to communicate to the display through the customer's network / Unable to communicate after recently replacing network equipment/router.
    • Unable to publish or send messages.
    • Connect failed error on Venus 1500 home tab (V4).
    • Unable to open communication error -12 (V3).
    • Unable to auto-detect display in the SW.
    • Cannot ping display.
  • IP address on sign is not similar to the IP assigned to the computer.
  • Changed IP scheme, no longer able to connect to display/no communication.
  • Customer has recently changed Internet Service Providers, network router, or ISP modem.
  • Control computer uses a dock, and switches between wireless and wired connections to local network.

Environment

  • Product Family: Message Displays
  • Product: Galaxy, GalaxyPro, Electronic Message Center (EMC) or Board (EMB), Marquee, Readerboard
  • Component: Ethernet based communication through a network, Controller network settings, IP addressing
  • Control System: Venus 1500 v4

Cause

  • Sign controller's addressing scheme is not compatible with the network.
    • A network change may have occurred / New IP scheme implemented / Network has changed IP ranges, Subnet mask, or Default Gateway.
    • Site has multiple networks available and computer is not currently connected to the correct network for the sign connection.
    • Controller may have been changed and the IP settings were left on the default IP settings.
    • Control computer switches between wired and wireless network, these networks are not on the same subnet.

Resolution

For Temporary Operation

If the display connected to the network equipment we can attempt to add a secondary to establish a connection to the display. If a connection is established we can then take time and configure the display to an IP compatible with the customers network.

  1. Add a secondary IP address to the Local Area Connection under Network Connections within the subnet of the display.  See "How to add a secondary IP address to a computer", DD2059662.

Note:  On LARGER networks (i.e. multi-router setups or subnets using less then 24 bits for the subnet mask (e.g. 255.255.0.0) , it will likely be necessary to bypass the network and connect directly to the Daktronics Ethernet-based communication equipment  in order to change the IP address (i.e. the network tunnel method will not work). It is still worth the time and attempt adding a secondary.

Direct connecting to the display

  1. Bypass network and connect directly to communication equipment or directly to the display controller
  2. Install a USB to Ethernet adapter and bypass the network.  See How do I set up a D-Link USB to Ethernet adaptor for a Message Center display?, DD1981123 for details.
