How to update mod firmware using the VFC or web UI

Topic

  • How to update module firmware using a memory stick (flash drive, thumb drive) and the VFC controller.
  • How do I update mod firmware using the webpage user interface?

Environment

  • Product Family: Transportation
  • Product: Vanguard
  • Components: VFC, modules (mods)

Steps

  • Check the BOM (bill of material) to ensure you are using the correct firmware number & revision for the module you want to update. Then navigate to J:\Dak3024 folder location for the DD/ED number of the firmware needed.
  • Some modules will have only micro firmware and it is the only firmware that needs to be updated
  • Some modules will have both the micro and EPLD and they both need to be updated

  • NEW FILE PATH:
  • Modules 0P-1971-4650 & 0P-1972-4750. The following is an example:
    • Example file path J:\Dak3024\030xxxxx\03087618\VFC load files
    • In most cases, to just update the "firmware", then it would be the production file (bottom hex file in the list). That's the main program to use.
    • The FW package (top hex file in the list) includes all of the files below it in one big file. This should not be needed in the field.
    • It's best to leave the MDF, ORDF and LPF alone.
      • LPF = LED file
      • MDF = Module definition file (about the size, voltages, etc)
      • ORDF = Output routine (how we want to display content)
  • OLD FILE PATH:
    • Example file path J:\Dak3024\030xxxxx\03087618\VFC load files
    • DD123456789_Gen5_module_fw_pkg_bootload_hid2097.hex
    • DD123456789_production_bootload_hid2096.hex
    • DD1234556789_production_bootload_hid2097.hex

  • Modules 0P-1332-xxxx using 0P-1332-5034 as an example
    • Identify mod firmware in the BOM of the mod - In this example ER-1446708
    • Example file path J:\Dak3024\014xxxxx\01446708\VFC load files
    • Upload the ramload file - In this example DD1446708_ramload_bootload_hid205A
    • This will blank the sign
    • Upload the micro file - In this example DD1446708_micro_bootload_hid205A
    • The sign should return to content and the firmware will be updated

Steps if you are connected to the VFC using a Laptop:

  1. Download the mod firmware to your computer.
  2. Open an internet browser to log into the VIP board inside the VFC controller.

  9. Wait for it to finish 100%
  10. If there isn't a ramload file continue
  11. Select Update and browse to the epld module file.
  12. Click on the Open button.
  13. Wait for it to finish 100%
  14. If there isn't a epld file continue
  15. Select Update and browse to the micro module file.
  16. Click on the Open button.
  17. Wait for it to finish 100%.

Steps if you are directly at the VFC:

  3. Log into the VFC by pressing enter on the keypad.
