Receiving "The process does not possess the 'SeSecurityPrivilege' privilege which is required for this operation" during manual installation of SQL Server 2008, inadequate permissions

Potential Symptoms

  • Trying to install SQL Server 2008 manually and getting error "The process does not possess the 'SeSecurityPrivilege' privilege which is required for this operation" during installation process.
  • Access Denied error during SQL Installation

Cause

  • This is due to not having adequate permissions with the account being used. This can often be caused by the permissions the account has from a Group Policy setup.

Resolution

  1. Go to > Local Security Policy- > Local Policies -> User Rights Assignment on the computer.
  2. Assign your logged in account (ex.[domain]/[username]) the following rights:
    • Back up files and directories 
    • Debug Programs
    • Manage auditing and Security log
    • Restore files and directories 
    • Take ownership of files or other objects 
  3. Once you have done this, log out then log back in again. Reference SQL Server installation fails if the Setup account does not have certain user rights for more information.
