Receive error "The Video could not be opened due to a missing codec or the codec was not properly installed." when importing video on a Virtual Machine or Server.

Potential Symptoms

  • Receive error "The Video could not be opened due to a missing codec or the codec was not properly installed." when importing video on a Virtual Machine or Server.
  • Error: Daktronics Content Studio The Video could not be opened due to a missing codec or the codec was not properly installed.

Environment

  • Product: 
  • Component: Content Studio
  • Control System: Venus 1500 V4

Cause

  • The cause is due to on some Virtual Machines or Windows Server setups are unable to access the DirectX Features of the video card/drive. Virtual Machines do not access the native Video card on the basic setup. Currently at this time Daktronics does not support Venus 1500 v4 to be installed on a Virtual Machine or Windows Servers.
  • If not installed on a Virtual Machine or Windows Server, it could be due to no Video Card access as well.

Verify if the Video Card and/or the DirectX Features are accessible:

  1. Go to Windows Start Menu.
  2. In Search programs and file type DXDIAG.
  3. Click on the DXDIAG in the filtered menu.
  4. Click Yes or Ok to the prompt.
  5. Click Display or Display 1 tab.
  6. Under DirectX features if DirectDraw and Direct3D features are not available, this is the issue and will not allow videos to import.

Resolution

Option 1: Install software on a single stand alone computer, not on a Virtual Machine or server type setup. Venus 1500 v4 software is not supported on any type of Windows Server. What operating systems are supported with the Venus 1500 software versions? DD1995806

Option 2: Contact your Company IT Department or Computer Technician and have them enable the DirectX Features on the Virtual Machine.
