Modem, Intermittent connection with Venus software, communication timeout

Potential Symptoms

  • Connection to display through Venus 1500 is intermittent through modem, may periodically get an "Invalid Response" error or alert.
  • When trying to retrieve messages from controller get an error:  "Unable to Retrieve."
  • Connects reliably or more reliably in M2Config.

Environment

  • Product Family: Message Displays
  • Product: Animated Displays
  • Component: Dial up Modem 
  • Control System: Venus 1500 v3 or v4

Cause

  • Communication timeouts setting is too short.

Resolution

  • Increase communication timeouts (default is 2 seconds, max is 30 seconds) for Dial-up.
     
    • For Venus 1500 v3, Refer to page 30 in ED-13530:
      1. Open Display Administrator.
      2. Edit menu>> Defaults.
      3. In Communication Timeouts section (top section), change Dial-up to at least 20 seconds.
         
    • For Venus 1500 v4, refer to page 88 and 89 in DD1370296: (for v4.13 or earlier, best option is to update to last version with Modem support; v4.19.2 first). * Contact Daktronics helpdesk for assistance if update is needed.
       
      1. Go to orange V.
      2. Venus 1500 Options button.
      3. Select Communications on left pane.
      4. In Communication Timeouts section (top section), change Dial-up to at least 20 seconds.
