How to troubleshoot a DS-1520 horn that is no longer working or is muffled that already has a 12VDC PS Horn Kit installed

Potential Symptoms

How to troubleshoot a DS-1520 horn that is no longer working or muffled that already has a 12VDC Power Supply Horn kit installed.

Environment

  • Product:  Shot Clocks and ColorSmart Shot Clocks shipped before November 5, 2012
  • Component:  DS-1520 12VDC horn; 0A-1230-0216 - Shot Clock Horn Kit; 12VDC PS to Horn
  • Control System:  All Sport

Resolution

NOTE: Only use this article to troubleshoot shot clocks that already have the 12VDC Power Supply Horn Kit installed.

Verify the following:
  1. Verify the problem still exists.
  2. Verify the dimming level in the console is set to "None" (0-zero).
    a. If the dimming level was set to something other than "None" the horn could be locked up and might require it to be lightly tapped to get it working again, even though the dimming level is currently set to "None". Be cautious when tapping the horn to NOT touch any wiring.
    b. It is also possible that having the dimming level set to something other than "None" could of damaged the horn requiring horn replacement to get it working again.
  3. Note for Steps 4-9, DO NOT touch any of the electrical components or wires other than the one being measured.
  4. Very gently open the display.
  5. Test the horn again, (Help Desk Tech note functionality in case notes).
    a. If fault condition still exists, continue to Step 6.
    b. If fault condition no longer exists, got to Step 8a.
  6. Without unplugging the power cord, check the incoming main supply voltage at a convenient location, (Help Desk Tech record reading in case notes).
    a. Convenient locations might be at the back of the input power jack or the wire nuts on the power cord.
  7. VISUALLY inspect all of the Fast-On connections in the horn circuit, (transformer, bridge rectifier, horn).
    a. If a Fast-On is disconnected we don't need to take measurements.  Try to determine how it happened and do what is required to eliminate the disconnection from occurring in the future.
    b. If the Fast-On does not look like it makes a tight connection (Help Desk Tech record this fact in case notes) try to fix it by compressing it with pliers.
  8. Test horn again, (Help Desk Tech note functionality in case notes).
    a. If fault condition still exists, escalate to engineering by following Internal Notes.
    b. If fault condition no longer exists, test the other shot clock and consider involving and Escalated Technician.
