Upgraded Audiovisual Experience Being Delivered to The Citadel with Daktronics Equipment

Six new LED displays and a new sound system to be installed this summer

BROOKINGS, S.D. – June 23, 2021 – To upgrade the audiovisual experience at Johnson Hagood Stadium, The Citadel has partnered with Daktronics (NASDAQ-DAKT) of Brookings, South Dakota, to design, manufacture and install six new LED displays and a new audio system in Charleston, South Carolina. The installation will be taking place this summer to have the venue ready to welcome visitors in the fall.

“The Citadel is looking forward to working with Daktronics on this very exciting project,” said Mike Capaccio, director of athletics for The Citadel. “This is the next step in our stadium enhancement project at Johnson Hagood Stadium and will provide our fans a great experience with the newest technology available for a video board.”

The center video display measures approximately 26.5 feet high by 51.5 feet wide and four side displays each measure approximately 15.5 feet high by 13 feet wide. An auxiliary display measures more than 7 feet high by 18 feet wide. These six displays all feature 15HD pixel layouts to bring excellent image clarity and contrast to fans in every seat of Johnson Hagood Stadium.

A Sportsound® 2000 audio system will be integrated into the video and scoring system at The Citadel. The system provides full-range sound reproduction and delivers clear and intelligible speech for an exceptional listening experience for those in the stadium.

“We’re excited to be working with The Citadel again,” said Corey Williams, Daktronics sales representative. “To be chosen for this project and further our long-standing partnership is an honor. With the addition of these displays at Johnson Hagood Stadium, Bulldog fans will return to a new and more engaging game-day environment. We can’t wait to join them and see everything up and running.”

This new scoreboard is funded by a generous gift of $1.2 million from Bill Varner, ’73, for his class’s 50th Reunion Campaign with The Citadel Foundation.

In recognition of his generosity, the new scoreboard will be known publicly through visual signage and audio recognition as the Class of 1973 Scoreboard. The Class of 1973 also aims to create an endowment of $300,000 to provide resources for the future maintenance of the system to ensure its vitality for years to come.

The main video display and auxiliary display are capable of variable content zoning allowing each to show one large image or multiple zoned images including any combination of live video, instant replays, up-to-the-minute statistics, graphics and animations, and sponsorship messages.

In addition to the equipment installation, The Citadel will also receive a content package that will be produced and delivered by Daktronics Creative Services.

Daktronics will also be including its powerful Show Control solution with this installation. This industry-leading system provides a combination of display control software, world-class video processing, data integration and playback hardware that forms a user-friendly production solution.
