Daktronics Nucleus Server will not start, Private Key missing

Potential Symptoms

 

  • When launching Venus 1500 or Vanguard, receive an error:
    • An error occurred when logging in. There was no endpoint listening at net.pipe://localhost/Daktronics/Nucleus/UserManagementService that could accept the message. This is often caused by an incorrect address or SOAP action. See InnerException, if present, for more details.

 

  • The Daktronics Nucleus Server will not start and the Error.log shows one or more of the following errors:
    • Log Location:
      • 32-bit: C:\Program Files\Daktronics\Nucleus Server\Logs.
      • 64-bit: C:\Program Files (x86)\Daktronics\Nucleus Server\Logs.
    • The certificate 'CN=Daktronics Nucleus' must have a private key that is capable of key exchange. The process must have access rights for the private key.
    • 'CN=Daktronics Nucleus' may not have a private key that is capable of key exchange or the process may not have access rights for the private key.
    • 'Cannot find X.509 certificate....' Note: This may occur after the computer performs Windows Updates.
  • Content Studio when being utilized through Display Studio presents error - Cannot load the X.509 certificate identity specified in the configuration

Cause

The cause of the issue is the Private Key was either deleted, moved, or corrupted on the Computer.

Resolution

  • Verify that Certificate is missing by viewing the log listed in the Symptoms before proceeding to the Resolution. Uninstall and Reinstall the Daktronics Nucleus certificate by performing the following: 
Step 1:  Remove the existing certificate by one of the following options. This can be performed by using Microsoft Management Console (MMC). 
  1. Go to Windows Start Menu.
    • Windows XP - Click Run, type MMC and hit [Enter].
    • Windows Vista or 7 - In the Search Programs and Files, type MMC, select MMC from filtered Start Menu.
    • Windows 8 - Hover to bottom right of desktop, click Magnifying Glass, type MMC and hit [Enter].
    • Windows 10 - Type MMC in the search bar and click on the MMC run command.
      • Alternatively can type Run, open Run app, type MMC and hit [Enter].
  2. From the MMC Console, click File -> Add/Remove Snap-in.
  3. Under Available snap-ins menu, select Certificates and click Add > to push to Selected snap-ins menu.
  4. From the Pop-up window (Pop-up window will not appear if not on account with full administrative rights), select Computer Account and click Next.
  5. Leave on or select Local Computer and click Finish.
  6. Click Ok.
  7. In the Name panel, double-click Certificates (Local Computer).
  8. In the Logical Store Name panel, double-click Trusted Root Certification Authorities.
  9. In the Object Type panel, double-click Certificates.
  10. Under the Issued To column, browse and select the Daktronics Nucleus.
  11. Once Daktronics Nucleus is Selected, click the Red X, hit [Delete] or go to Actions -> Delete.
  12. Click Yes to the prompt.
  13. Close out of the MMC Console, click No to save the Console.
Step 2: Re-install the Daktronics Nucleus Certificate by running a software repair on Display Studio, Vanguard or Venus 1500 v4.
    • Do not uninstall Venus 1500 v4 if currently installed, perform a software repair.
